Marriage must always be understood from God's perspective rather than man's perspective.
Marriage must always be understood from God's perspective rather than man's perspective. Nearly every problem in marriage begins because people start with human needs, culture, emotions, or experience instead of beginning with God's eternal purpose.
God's Purpose, Design, and Decision Regarding Marriage
1. Marriage begins with God, not with man
First, we challenge the common assumption that marriage exists simply because people fall in love, desire companionship, or want to build a family.
Instead, Scripture presents marriage as something that originated entirely in God's heart before it ever became man's experience.
Marriage is:
- God's idea.
- God's institution.
- God's design.
- God's ordination.
- God's purpose.
It is therefore neither:
- a human invention,
- a cultural tradition,
- a legal contract,
- nor merely a social necessity.
Rather, marriage belongs to God because He created it for His own eternal purpose.
The implication is profound: if marriage originates with God, then only God can properly define its purpose and teach humanity how to live it.
2. God's purpose precedes man's need, come before man’s need.
There is an important distinction between human need and God's purpose.
Most people read Genesis 2 thinking:
Adam was lonely.
Therefore:
God created Eve to solve Adam's loneliness.
This is an incomplete understanding.
Instead, God first had an eternal purpose for mankind in Genesis 1:
- to bear His image,
- to express Him,
- to exercise His authority,
- to rule under Him.
Only after revealing this purpose does God declare:
"It is not good that man should be alone."
Thus, God's statement is not primarily about loneliness.
It is about man's inability to fulfill God's purpose alone.
Marriage therefore exists because God's purpose requires it.
3. "It is not good" reveals God's heart
Genesis repeatedly says:
"God saw that it was good."
Then suddenly:
"It is not good."
This does not mean God made a mistake.
Nor does it suggest God forgot to create woman.
Instead, the statement reveals something hidden within God's own heart.
God intentionally created Adam first in order to reveal an important spiritual principle:
Man by himself is incomplete for accomplishing God's eternal purpose.
The problem is not merely isolation.
The problem is incompleteness.
We need to repeatedly emphasizes:
Alone, man cannot fully receive God's provision.
Alone, man cannot properly tend and keep God's garden.
Alone, man cannot fulfill God's commission.
Therefore God says,
"I will make him a helper."
